Sunawarness 2014

Can you believe were half way through March already ?  Something you may not know is that the 1st of March spells the start of sunawarness season.

That means covering up with sunfilter, wearing sunglasses, staying in the shade at peak times and using appropriate clothing in direct sunlight.  This applies if your in Ireland or lucky enough to be in Europe or the states this year.

We really do have a huge issue with skin cancer in this country.  There are over 8,000 cases of skin cancer diagnosed  every year in Ireland and it is thought that skin cancer will increase by 140% over the next 10 years.

The good news that this is all preventable just by following the sunsmart code.

    Hi selene,
what factor do you recommended for day to day protection fir this time of year? Also, do kids need a higher factor?

    • Hi Amanda,
Im a bit of a loon when it comes to sunprotection and i think you can never get enough. I always use a factor 50 on myself and the children. Even if you use factor 50′s constantly there will still be some absorption of UV light to help us with our Vitamin D levels The face is always the most important if we want to achieve anti ageing and prevent skin cancers. Factor 50′s are not what they used to be. Companies have developed formultions that are invisable with active ingrediants which address individual skin care needs. Enjoy the summer x

You’re doing a great job raising awareness Selene, keep it up! Can you recommended a high SPF product for oily / combination skin that won’t let my make up slide off as the day goes on?

    • Hi Karen,
Thanks for the comment. A lot of sunfilters have built in emmoliants which are great for dry skins but can block pores and cause acne in ladies like us who get an oily T zone. Thankfully cosemtic companies have cooked up a number of products which not only give high protection but also address skin care issues. My favorites are La Roche Posay Anthellios Factor 50 (which also comes in a tinted version). I really love Avenes Mineral factor 50 which also comes in a little make upcompact. Elave have just launced their anti ageing range and have a fab factor 45 which dosent irritate underlying skin conditions. Its so gentle it can also be used on children. And finally done forget the lips. All the above companies carry lip filters which protect the lips from burning and drying x
