Acne Update

acne 2014

Evening everyone.  I had a query yesterday from a follower about a new onset of acne in the over 30′s.

unfortunately there has been a significant increase in women developing acne in their 30′s and 40′s.  Sometimes these ladies have never had acne before !

In a nutshell acne occurs when too much sebum is present (often triggered by hormones) and also involves a bacteria called P.Acnes.

Acne can have one or a combination of the following:

Papules (hard red spots)

Pustules (spots with a yellow head, the ones we like to pick)

Open and closed comedones (white and blackheads)

So how do we control them?  The first line of treatment is to sort out cleansing and moisturising.

Use something to cleanse the skin that is suitable for acne type skin but doesnt strip all the oils from the skin surface.  If we use very harsh alcohol based products it actually encourages more production of sebum leading to more spots.   It also leaves the skin dry and itchy which encourages picking.  For this reason it is so important to use a moisturiser.  Cosmeceutical products available now offer active ingredients which help reduce inflammation and eliminate P. Acnes bacteria while simultaneously moisturising and soothing.

Remember some anti-acne (or non-comenogenic) ingredients may make you more sensitive to light so don’t forget the sunfilter.

And for my top tip if you have acne make sure your foundation is not oil based.  A lot of long-lasting or anti ageing foundations contain a high moisturiser content which can actually trigger mild acne in some women.

My top favorite products for acne skin are Avene Cleanance and Triacneal.  La Roche Posay Anthellios SPF 30 (sunfilter for acne prone skin.

And for foundations its Vichy Dermablend or MAC Matchmaster

Fair play to ya Selene. The website is great. Lots of great info!!
I’ll have to have a look into some of those make-ups and maybe hound you with some questions next time I’m in Mayo!

  2. Thought I had seen the back of acne but unfortunately age is no protection.

  3. Well done Selene! I recently changed to Mac studio fix and noticed I’m breaking out. Is it an oil based foundation so you know? X

    • Hi Karen,
I used to wear studio fix and noticed the same. Plus it used to slide off my face by lunchtime. Match master is fantastic. I wear 3.0 shade and it blends really easily x
